The premier supplier of polylactic acid (PLA) polymers is NatureWorks. The U.S.-based firm, owned by Cargill and Thai petrochemical company PTT, produces corn-derived bioplastics for packaging, manufacturing, and 3D printing. In 2015, NatureWorks began building an innovation lab focused on 3D printing after experiencing high demand for its materials. For years, the company has been working to establish a large PLA facility in Thailand to expand its production capacity.

NatureWorks soon became the “branded” PLA that filament companies proudly showcased as a mark of quality. This has undoubtedly benefited the firm as AM’s niche has expanded significantly. Now, the company is tapping into a major trend in 3D printing: high-speed PLA with its new Ingeo 3D300 material.
