Bound metal 3D printing, also known as bound metal deposition, is a process in which a filament containing metal powder—held together by polymer, wax, or a combination—is extruded using a material extrusion system. Virtually any 3D printer, whether simple or complex, can be used to print the parts. However, after printing, the part must undergo debinding and sintering. These steps require handling the parts carefully, as users must be mindful of fumes and other safety considerations. While the printing step can be done in an office setting, proper safety measures are essential for debinding and sintering.

It is indeed a pivotal moment for bound filament 3D printing. Markforged has been acquired by Nano Dimension—or has it? Meanwhile, Desktop Metal, another key pioneer, is also entangled in a complex relationship with the same company. If both mergers proceed, something will have to give. If one or both deals unravel, both firms face an uncertain future. Another major player, Forward AM, is also navigating a challenging period. The technology appears to be teetering on the edge.

Optimism

But I believe there are reasons to be optimistic about the future of bound metal.
